"La Torrecilla"
The jewel of Lanzarote
The wine-growing
estate "La Torrecilla" on the Sunny Island of Lanzarote was once a present
from the king of Spain to the most powerful patrician family of Lanzarote.
The buildings are towering 400 m high over the Atlantic Ocean, on the saddle
of the second highest mountain of the island.
The massive medieval style of
the buildings dating from the 19th century can be explained by the fact, that
at the beginning of the 20th century the Island of Lanzarote was still being attacked
by pirates, and the manor had to offer sufficient protection to the inhabitants.
From
La Torrecilla Manor - the former residence of the family López-Bethencourt
- there is a magnificent view of the sea and the vineyards. A rocky mountainous
landscape in the background emphasizes the romantic beauty of the estate.
It
is worth mentioning, that the former owners of this country estate are descendants
of the late Baron Bethencourt - half nobleman, half pirate - who had conquered
the Island of Lanzarote in the 15th century and then sold it to the Spanish crown.
Even
the different German ARD and ZDF television teams could not resist the unique
fairy-tale magic of this estate, situated within the Northern National Park of
Lanzarote Island; so they just could not miss this marvellous place for their
different documentary films about Lanzarote.
The German Newspaper "Frankfurter
Allgemeine" once also praised La Torrecilla Manor in an article on Lanzarote
as the most beautiful estate: "It is the foreigner who preserves the classic
architecture of Lanzarote with taste and good will. There exist more than enough
examples. One of the most beautiful is the wine-growing estate La Torrecilla Manor
in the North of the Island, owned by a German baron. Urbanisations such as Las
Cucharas or El Pueblo Marinero - for which even César Manrique has lent
his name - seem quite modest in comparison with this magnificent building from
the 19th century". End of the quotation!
Also for the well known German
television film TIMM THALER, many impressive scenes were shot at La Torrecilla
Manor.
The romantic, well sheltered bathing-bays with their snow-white sands
in the near proximity are quick to be reached and inviting to swim and sunbathe.
The
most beautiful attractions of Lanzarote Island are situated in the vicinity, too:
The
second largest, mighty volcanic cave of the world. Its sections La Cueva de los
Verdes and Los Jameosdel Agua have been conditioned. There is a fairy-tale illumination
and a subterranean pond, where folklore and disco performances alternate in the
evenings.
They also harbour a theatre, where artistic presentations of high standard take
place.
The El Mirador del Río - a vantage point café
with a 20 m long oval panoramic panel, has been built into the top of a 500 m
high cliff. It can be reached by car in only 4 minutes.
Although the buildings
have to be modernized and renovated, La Torrecilla Manor is of high active value;
not only because of its excellent situation and singular beauty, but also and
particularly because of all its surroundings that can't be impaired by future
developments.
